Depiction and Interpretation: the Influence of the Holocaust on the Visual Arts

תקציר:

A pioneering study of the impact of the Holocaust on artists from various backgrounds, religions and countries, including those who were caught in its web and those who only heard about it. The work is divided into two parts. The first treats problems arising from depictions of the Holocaust, contrasting works by eyewitnesses who documented what they had seen, to those of non-witnesses who had various personal reasons for the iconographic and stylistic influence that the Holocaust had on them. The second part deals with interpretations of and commentaries on the Holocaust, stressing the use of symbols, Biblical and mythological themes to convey ideas, and the reasons some artists turned to abstract art or to a stress on their Jewish identity.
